Quick FAQs
What are mobile ads?
Mobile ads are a format of ads that appear on mobile websites, and are available as either text or image ads. Mobile text ads can also appear when users search Google from a mobile device. With either type of ad, users who click on your ad will be sent to your mobile webpage. With mobile text ads, you also have the option to connect users to your business phone.
Mobile ads are currently available to advertisers targeting the following countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Mobile ads are only displayed on mobile carriers in those locations. Most advertisers in many different countries are eligible to create mobile ads, even if they won't be able to see them (if your billing address isn't in one of the countries listed above, you won't see your ad).
What do mobile ads look like?
Mobile text ads contain two lines of text, with a limit of 12 or 18 characters per line, depending on the language in which you write your ad. Your destination URL appears on a third line if you choose to enter one. If you select the option that allows customers to connect directly to your business phone, a Call link will appear next to your destination URL.
Mobile image ads will look like whatever image file you've uploaded.
When can I expect to see clicks on my mobile ads?
Mobile ads must be reviewed before appearing on mobile searches. Once we confirm that your mobile ads meet standard advertising policies, you may start to see clicks on your mobile ads. After you begin receiving clicks on your mobile ads, you'll be able to run reports to see how they're performing. You can also view details about costs and the number of clicks received.
What are the policies for mobile image ads?
Mobile image ads are graphical ads that appear on select mobile content websites in the mobile network. Image ads can appear only on the pages of mobile content publishers who have opted in to the image ads program.
In general, we've highlighted some important distinctions and other notable aspects about mobile image ads below.
FamilySafe content:
Ads may only use FamilySafe content. Ads are reviewed and categorized as 'FamilySafe,' 'Non-FamilySafe,' or 'Adult Sexual Content' depending on the content of the ad and website. Only 'FamilySafe' images (containing no adult content) will be approved. Your images may not contain:
- Any material intended for persons over 18
- Mature sexual themes, nudity, and/or sexual activity
- Crude or indecent language
- Offensive or inappropriate content
Ad sizes and file size limits:
The following banner sizes will be shown:
6:1 Aspect Ratio
- 300 x 50, less than 7.5k file size
- 216 x 36, less than 4.5k file size
- 168 x 28, less than 3k file size
4:1 Aspect Ratio
- 300 x 75, less than 7.5k file size
- 216 x 54, less than 4.5k file size
- 168 x 42, less than 3k file size
Japan-standard size
- 192 x 53, less than 5k file size
Please note that your image will not be resized.
If already in a campaign, the following formerly-accepted formats will continue to be able to run:
- wml (WAP 1.x)
- xhtml (WAP 2.0)
- chtml (imode, etc.)
- PDA-compliant html
File types:
All images must be in a .JPEG, .GIF, or .PNG format.
Animated .GIF images are also acceptable. However, they must follow the same guidelines and specifications as PC-based image ads.
Markup languages:
To ensure that we're able to display your mobile ad and site to users, your destination site must be written in a supported mobile markup language. We currently support the following markup languages:
- 305 x 64, less than 3k file size
- 215 x 34, less than 2k file size
- 192 x 53, less than 2k file size
- 167 x 30, less than 2k file size
Flash image ads:
Flash image ads won't be supported at this time.
Targeting
In what countries can mobile ads show?
At this time, advertisers may target their mobile ads to any of the following countries: Austria, Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Mobile ads are only displayed on mobile carriers in those locations. Most advertisers in many different countries are eligible to create mobile ads, even if they won't be able to see them (if your billing address isn't in one of the countries listed above, you won't see your ad).
Will my mobile ad format ads show on iPhones and similar mobile devices?
In most cases, no. On both Google web search and the Google Content Network, ads in the mobile ad format will not appear on iPhones, the T-Mobile G1, or similar mobile devices with full (HTML) browsers where we show mobile-targeted desktop ads.
They'll appear on Google search results and the Google Content Network only on mobile devices that use mobile (WAP) browsers only, which currently make up the majority of internet-capable phones in use throughout the world.
For example, if your mobile ad is targeting the mobile Content Network, it will appear on Google Content Network sites when they are viewed on a WAP browser. The exception to this is some Japanese mobile publishers who always show mobile ads, so your mobile ad may appear on their site even when it is viewed on an iPhone or similar device.
Can I target my mobile ads to different languages?
Your mobile ads can target any language, but will only appear on searches performed from locations where mobile ads are available.
How small an area can I location-target my mobile ads to?
Mobile ads can now be location-targeted to levels below the country level, such as cities and metro areas. The number of mobile search queries for which we have accurate geo-targeting data is growing, but currently limited. This means that mobile ads in a campaign targeting an area below the country level may not receive many impressions initially.
Which device platform option should I choose if I only want to show mobile ads on mobile devices with WAP browsers?
If you'd like to target mobile format ads to these types of mobile devices, simply make sure you've created mobile ads in your campaign.
Device platform targeting doesn't apply to the mobile ad format. Your mobile ads will be able to show regardless of the device platforms your campaign is set to target.
What is carrier targeting? With the carrier targeting feature, you can choose which mobile carriers' users will see your mobile ads. Depending on the carrier you choose, you can create operator-specific messages in your ads (e.g., "Ringtones for X Mobile Carrier") or display your ads only on carriers that support your ads' landing pages.
Please note that the option to select specific carriers isn't offered in all countries. Below is a list of countries where this feature is currently available. |

On what networks will my mobile ads appear? Mobile text ads can appear on both of Google's search and Content Network, while mobile image ads can only appear on the mobile Content Network.
We suggest that you create a new campaign specifically for mobile ads running on the Content Network so that your non-mobile ads remain running on the network of your choice.
Where can the different online ad formats show?
Wondering where certain online ad formats are eligible show, on what device platforms, and what other formats compete on the networks? We've created a handy chart for you to see everything at once.
In general, new campaigns are set by default to show their ad formats to all device platforms and networks on which the ad format is eligible to appear. However, you can change your targeting and network selections in the campaign's settings section at any time. |

Is mobile ads pricing the same as PC-based text or image ads pricing?
Mobile ads pricing - whether image or text - is similar to pricing for ads running on the PC Google Network. You choose a maximum cost-per-click (CPC)* for each keyword from US$0.01 to US$100.00 (or the local currency equivalent), but smart pricing doesn't apply. You're only charged when a user clicks on your ad. In the case of mobile text ads, users also have the option of using the click-to-call link in your ad.
Your daily budget can go as high as you like. You may change your amounts within these ranges at any time, and there's no minimum spending commitment.
SEMNation Campaign Management fee is over and above the amount payable to Third
Party Network e.g. Google. Typically SEMNation Campaign Management Charges are 2.5$ per keyword per month with minimum commitment of 250$ per month.
Mobile Websites
How do I know in which markup language my website is written?
If you aren't sure which markup language(s) your website is written in, we suggest contacting your webmaster, or the person who maintains your site. You can also try to identify the markup language by following these steps:
From Internet Explorer:
1. Open a new browser window, and enter your mobile web address.
- If you see a pop-up that asks you to download a file with 'wml' in the title, your site is written in wml.
2. If you can access your site in IE, right-click anywhere on the main page, and select 'View Source' to review the source code.
- If the source code starts with '?xml...," your site is written in xhtml.'
- If the source code starts with '!DOCTYPE HTML..., your site is written in chtml or html.'
From Firefox:
1. Open a new browser window, and enter your mobile web address.
- If you see a pop-up that says: 'You have chosen to open xxx which is a: ___.wml,' your site is written in wml.
2. If you can access your site in Firefox, right-click anywhere on the main page, and select 'View Page Source' to review the source code.
- If the source code starts with '?xml...,' your site is written in xhtml.
- If the source code starts with '!DOCTYPE HTML...,' your site is written in chtml or html.
Sometimes, multiple versions of mobile websites are created, each written in a different markup language. Depending on how your mobile website was created, and how many markup languages it's available in, your site might automatically detect the compatible markup language for a user's mobile device. Sites that detect markup languages will automatically serve the correct version of your site. If different versions of your mobile website exist in multiple markup languages, make sure you select each language your site supports.
How do I create a mobile webpage?
You can create a mobile website by rewriting your page in a mobile markup language, such as XHTML, WML, or CHTML. Also, make sure that the layout of your website is properly formatted to display on mobile phones. For more information on mobile websites, contact your webmaster or read more about how to develop your own mobile website.
Keep in mind that it's not necessary to have a mobile landing page to run mobile ads. Instead, you can link your phone number to a mobile ad, so users can call you directly.
Why do I need to specify the markup language of my mobile web page?
Mobile web sites are presented in various formats and protocols, and not all mobile devices are compatible with each format.
By knowing in which markup language your mobile web page is written, we can make sure your ads are shown on compatible devices.
Tracking Tools What kind of reporting is available for mobile ads?
There are several reporting options available for mobile text ads. You can see how each mobile text ad variation is performing by running an Ad Performance report. At this time, reporting for mobile image ads isn't available.
What mobile reporting is available through Google Analytics?
Google Analytics can help you keep track of how users interact with your website or app using their phones. You can use it to track the following:
User activity on your mobile website
All the same data that you've come to expect from your Google Analytics reports is now available for mobile websites. Simply paste our server-side code snippets on each page you wish to track. Google Analytics then creates a profile for your mobile website, where you can view the same kind of information that's in standard Analytics reports, like visitor information and traffic sources. You'll be able to track users visiting your mobile website from both smartphones (like iPhones and Android devices) and WAP devices.
We support the following server-side languages:
Users accessing your regular website from their high-end mobile device
You can use Google Analytics to track traffic to your regular website that comes from high-end mobile devices like iPhones, Android devices, and the Palm Pre. All traffic from high-end mobile devices can be viewed by device or carrier under the 'Visitors' section in the 'Mobile' tab of your Analytics account, or in the 'Mobile advanced' section.
Users engaging with your iPhone or Android app
My reports tell me that my ad is appearing on adsenseformobileapps.com. What does this mean?
The adsenseformobileapps.com domain refers to downloadable applications on mobile devices like the iPhone and Android devices that are part of the Google Content Network. If your campaign is both set to show on the Content Network and targeting full-browser mobile devices, then your ads will be eligible to show on mobile apps. Your ad will be matched to mobile apps on the Content Network using the same contextual targeting factors that are used to show your ads on computers.
Advertising on mobile applications can be a valuable way to engage with your target audience. Mobile internet users are often close to the point of sale, and users of high-end devices are some of the most engaged targets. In addition, ad placements are all above the fold, so advertisers have steady interactions with users in the apps they use every day.

Click to Call Mobile phones (WAP only)
With mobile ads, can I connect users to my business via telephone?
Add your business phone number to your mobile WAP text ads to have a Call link appear at the end of your ad text
What number should I use to connect customers to my business?
Your business phone must be domestic to the location your mobile text ads target and may not be a toll number.
Can users still go to my website instead of calling me?
Yes. Users will see two options in your ad. They can click to call your business, or click and visit your URL
How can I connect users to my business telephone if I'm targeting multiple locations?
If you create a mobile campaign that targets multiple locations, and you'd like to connect users to your business telephone on mobile WAP text ads, you have two options:
1. Allow domestic users to connect directly to your business. Mobile WAP text ads containing click to call links only appear when someone searches Google from the location in which your phone number is located because international and toll telephone numbers are not permitted.
2. Create individual mobile WAP text ads for each location you're targeting. If you have different business phone numbers in different locations, you can enter each number in a mobile WAP text ad, and AdWords will display the appropriate one, depending on where the user is located.
What if the URL for my mobile ad is longer than 20 characters?
The display URL for your mobile ad must accurately reflect the URL of your mobile website. If the actual destination URL for your site doesn't meet our character limits, consider using a shortened version (such as your homepage). Keep in mind that the display URL field can't be used as another line of ad text, and your display URL must include the domain extension (.com, .net, or .org).
